 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL APPLICANT

The applicant has and can show characteristics similar to those identified as consistent with the 28th Maori Battalion.

Te ao Maori me te ao Pakeha

The 28th Maori Battalion was renowned, amongst other things, for its courage, vigour and competence. These are some of the qualities that provide applicants with the confidence to walk in both worlds. Applicants will have passion, strength and insight into what our Maori people want.

Kawa nga tikanga me te reo

The applicant’s first strength is their cultural competency and they should have some capability in te reo

Whanaungatanga

The applicant is well grounded among their people, from the flax roots. The applicant knows their whakapapa, and has been nurtured by their whanau. The applicant is well connected with their community.

Matauranga (Academic Success)

The applicant has successful and solid academic results and can demonstrate high performance and achievement.

Rangatiratanga

The applicant displays leadership qualities of adaptability, perseverance, courage and mana and should demonstrate they are able to pull people together, consult and delegate. The applicant is forward looking with dreams, visions and/or aspirations.

Manaakitanga

The applicant has provided support to their community and knows themselves and where they fit.

Whakaritenga (Setting Priorities)

It can be difficult to operate in te reo Maori at a high level because often whanau and hapu expectations conflict with work, sport or other commitments. The applicant has examples of how they have worked through conflicting priorities and is a well balanced New Zealander.

Te Wero

The maori Battalion challenged convention and took on new and leading edge jobs. They were a unique unit. The applicant is working in new field or is challenging exisiting ideas, conventions or expectations and may have overcome fear or obstacles. The applicant must demonstrate passion for their chosen field.
