New Zealand's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) administers applications for major infrastructure projects of national significance, and regulates new organisms (plants, animals, GM organisms) and hazardous substances and chemicals. The EPA also administers the Emissions Trading Scheme and New Zealand Emission Unit Register, and manages the environmental impact of activities in the EEZ, including prospecting for petroleum and minerals, seismic surveying and scientific research.
