Muriwai Iwi Ngai Tamanuhiri became one of the Turanga tribes to settle its historical treaty claims when it signed a final deed of settlement at Muriwai Marae on Sunday 6th of March, 2011.
One of the eldest Kuia of Ngai Tamanuhi Hera Smith, chief negotiator and Minister of Treaty Settlements Chris Finlayson, put pen to paper in a settlement deal that includes the return of Young Nick's Head Reserve and a cash payout of $11.07 million. A transfer of $3.57 million, the value of Ngai Tamanuhiri's share of Wharerata Forest, is also part of the package.
The deeds were signed on Saturday 5th of March, 2011 - the first at a dawn ceremony on Muriwai Beach highlighting the historical significance of Young Nick's Head Reserve. The remaining deeds were signed in an official ceremony at Muriwai Marae on the following Sunday.
